William Saito is a Japanese-American venture capitalist and businessman who has helped many younger entrepreneurs to find the success they seek. His knowledge of starting up businesses and helping others to do the same has earned him a great reputation. His own story started when he was in elementary school where he was already programming software. He started up his first company during his high school days and ended up attending the University of California at Riverside. It was there that he began a software firm right out of his college dorm room. Since that time he has been a crucial part of the creating of 25 different businesses, and he was recently named one of the 100 Most Influential People for Japan.
In 1998, Ernst & Young named William Saito the Entrepreneur of the Year. He sold his business to Microsoft later on and then created InTecur, which is a venture capital firm and consultancy that discovers new technologies and works with talented entrepreneurs who need a mentor. He also serves national governments from all over the world in an advisory role and has advised the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Information Technology Promotion Agency. As an author, William Saito has written The Team: Solving the Biggest Problem in Japan, which is a book about management. He has also appeared on television as a commentator and serves a spread of companies by being a member of their boards.
When William Saito was asked what he does in a typical day, he commented that he usually works with people to discover what their issues are and how he can help. He uses what he calls “design thinking” to come up with ideas and isn’t afraid to fail more than once before he finds success with an idea. He believes that the current age is the peak of information tech and is excited about new discoveries with artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, the cloud, robotics, and so much more. In his mind, we live in a world that used to only exist in science fiction novels. When asked if there every was a time that he failed at something and how he overcame it, he replied that he has failed many times. He continued by saying that if an entrepreneur hasn’t failed they just haven’t pushed the envelope far enough or done something truly unique.
